The poster is the oldest promotion channel in music and, until recently, the least measurable: you put five hundred of them on walls and never learned whether a single person acted on one. A QR code changes that, because a QR code is nothing more exotic than a URL rendered as squares — which means everything you already know about links applies to it, and two things follow immediately that most posters get wrong.
Encode the page, never the destination
A QR code encodes its URL at the moment of generation, permanently. There is no re-aiming a printed code; the ink is the address. So a poster carrying a raw Spotify URL is a double bet — that every passer-by uses Spotify, and that the URL never changes — and both halves lose often enough to matter. The code should encode a link page instead: the page routes each fan to their own service, and the page behind the URL stays editable forever, which is the only kind of "fixing a printed poster" that exists.
Print wants a short address, too. A query string full of UTM parameters makes a denser, harder-to-scan code and an unreadable line of text under it; a short link (DropRoute prints drp.cx/r/…) makes a sparser code and a URL a person can actually type — which some of them will, because not everyone scans.
Make the poster its own campaign
The measurement question — did the posters work — is only answerable if poster traffic arrives labelled. Create a campaign variant of the link for the poster before generating the code, the same way the story link and the ads link get theirs. Every scan then reports as its own channel, and "should we print again for the next release" becomes a question with a number attached rather than a feeling about foot traffic.
If you are postering more than one city or venue and genuinely want to compare them, a variant per city does that — at the cost of managing several codes. Do it only if the comparison would change a decision; a variant nobody reads back is admin, not attribution.
What makes a code scannable
A QR code fails in the physical world, not the digital one: a dim bar, a phone camera at an angle, a lamination sheet throwing glare. The properties that decide the outcome are mundane — the size of the individual modules relative to scanning distance, the quiet zone of empty space around the code, and the contrast between dark and light. DropRoute’s QR studio checks all three before it lets you download, because a code that fails on a mid-range phone in bad light was never a QR code, just a decoration.
Two production details worth knowing. First, download the SVG for print — it is a vector, so the same file is crisp on a flyer and on a four-metre banner, where a PNG sized for one becomes mush at the other. Second, a logo in the centre of the code is fine when it is done properly: the studio places it on a white backing and locks error correction to High, which is the setting that lets a reader reconstruct the modules the logo covers. A logo pasted over a code in an image editor, without that, is vandalism of your own poster.
Then test the one way that matters: print a proof at final size, put it where a poster would go, and scan it with your own phone from the distance a stranger would stand. Thirty seconds, before the print run, against a batch of five hundred decorations.
Where posters actually get scanned
Scanning takes both hands and about four seconds, which is a long time for someone walking past and nothing for someone standing still. Posters earn scans where people wait — the venue queue, the bar, the platform, the back of a bathroom door — and mostly do not earn them where people move. Height matters for the same physical reason: a code at eye level scans in place, a code at the top of a wall requires a fan to want it badly.
And print the short URL as text under the code, always. It serves the person whose camera will not cooperate, the person who distrusts QR codes on principle — a reasonable position, since a code is unreadable to the human eye until scanned — and the person who sees the poster in a photo of the wall rather than on it.
Reading the results
In DropRoute, the QR page shows scans per link over the last 90 days — counted as visits arriving through the short /r address that every printed code encodes. Counting began on 27 July 2026, so scans before that date do not appear, and the panel says so rather than leaving a silent gap. When the count cannot be read at all it shows "unavailable" instead of a zero, because a zero is a fact — the counting ran and nobody scanned — and an unreadable figure is a different fact.
Expect poster traffic to be small and unusually committed. A scan is the most deliberate act a promotion channel can ask for — the fan stopped, took out a phone, and aimed it — so judge the poster variant on click-through and signups, where that deliberateness shows, rather than on raw visits, where a single Instagram story will beat every wall in town.
Mistakes that survive the print run
- Printing before scanning a physical proof. The screen preview always scans; the laminated poster in a dark corridor is the real test.
- Encoding a destination instead of a page. The poster outlives the campaign, and only a page can keep the address pointing somewhere useful.
- Low-contrast styling. A pale code on a textured background photographs beautifully and scans terribly; the studio’s contrast check exists for exactly this temptation.
- Skipping the campaign variant. An unlabelled scan lands as direct traffic, and the one question the poster existed to answer goes unanswered.
